    It was another banner year in the classroom for Seward County student-athletes in 2013-2014 and 57 of those Saints and Lady Saints were rewarded on Tuesday as Athletics Director Galen McSpadden announced the Spring AD Honor Roll.
  • Brent Williams Named 1st Team NJCAA All-American

    With all of the success that the Seward County baseball program has had since the turn of the century, you know it is special when something good happens that hasn’t happened in over a decade, and that is exactly what happened on Tuesday, as freshman catcher Brent Williams was named a 1st Team NJCAA All-American. Williams becomes the Saints first 1st Team All-American since Ryan Nelson earned the honors during the 2003 season.

    Six Seward County Saints were honored by the conference this weekend as members of the All-Jayhawk West team. Catcher Brent Williams took home top honors as he was named a 1st Team selection as well as the Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year. Fellow freshmen Kevin Connolly and JB Olson were named 1st Team members as well. A trio of Seward sophomores earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors including lefty Austin King, outfielder Bryson Allen, and utility man Reed Thompson.

    They say pitching and defense wins championships and the Seward County Saints struggled with both again on Sunday in the Region VI Tournament as Seward committed 4 errors and gave rival Garden City 7 free passes to allow them to hang around and eventually knock off the Saints 7-6 in walk off fashion to end their 2014 season.

    The Seward County Saints got off to a good start Friday night in their Region VI Tournament 1st Round game with the rival Hutchinson Blue Dragons and finished the game with guns a blazing, but it was the middle innings that did them in as a four run 9th inning wasn’t enough to erase a five run Hutchinson lead as the Dragons hung on to win 8-7 to push Seward to the elimination bracket.
  • Williams Breaks NJCAA Doubles Record as Saints Pummel Panthers

    In a do or die situation Sunday afternoon at Hudson Field in Chanute, the Seward County Saints gave the proverbial monkey on their back a nice boot as they eliminated the two time defending Region VI Champion Neosho County Panthers with a 14-2 run rule pummeling to advance to the Region VI Championships next weekend in Wichita.
  • Saints Split; Setup Sunday Showdown

    It was a day of comebacks on Saturday as the Seward County Saints and Neosho County Panthers squared off in the first round of the 2014 Region VI Tournament. In the best of three series in Chanute, it was Seward who was down to their last strike in game one, coming from behind to win 9-8 in 10 innings before the Panthers erased a 4-2 Saints lead in the 8th inning of game two to scathe off elimination with a 5-4 walk off win to split the doubleheader. The split sets up a winner take all, Sunday contest with the winner moving on to the Region VI Championships and the loser packing it up and heading home for the year.

    Seward County sophomore Austin King became one of just two players in school history to accomplish a feat on Thursday, as he was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 1st Team as announced by CoSIDA.

  • Struggling Saints Swept on Day Two by Butler

    The Seward County Saints finished off a forgettable Jayhawk West Conference schedule on Sunday, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Butler to finish the conference season at 16-16, their most conference losses in school history. Needing two wins Sunday to clinch a home playoff series, Seward failed terribly as they were unable to hold a late lead to lose game one 6-5 before being drubbed in game two of the doubleheader 17-7 to wrap up their conference season.

    After completely dominating Cloud County on day one of their Jayhawk West Conference series, the Seward County Saints fell just as flat in the other direction on day two of the series as the 8th place T-Birds put it on Seward to the tune of 11-4 and 12-9 victories to put a large question mark on the Saints hopes for a Region VI Tournament home series in two weeks.

    In what has become a season of firsts, and some not necessarily in a good way, the Seward County Saints chalked up another tough one to that list Friday afternoon in Colby as they were swept in a Jayhawk West doubleheader with the Trojans for the first time in school history. In the opener it was a classic pitchers dual in which Colby scratched out a 1-0 win as the Saints hit into five double plays in the seven inning game. In game two early defensive miscues by Seward and a lack of offense throughout for the Saints was the difference in a 6-2 decision won by the Trojans.

    Fans that have come to expect high scoring, exciting affairs in Seward County midweek baseball games weren’t disappointed yesterday at Brent Gould Field in Liberal as Seward and visiting Clarendon went back and forth in a contest that featured 36 hits and 34 runs before the Saints finally outlasted the Bulldogs 18-16.

    The Seward County Saints roller coaster ride during their 2014 season continued on Wednesday in Borger, Texas as following a four game sweep of Pratt to finish on a high over the weekend, the Saints midweek woes on the mound surfaced once again against Frank Phillips as Seward was blown out 16-3 by Frank Phillips to fall to 22-17 on the year.
