Saints Fall to No. 15 Coffeyville at Home

LIBERAL, Kan. – A rough shooting night on Tuesday for Seward men's basketball led to a 78-62 defeat at the hands of the 15th ranked Coffeyville Red Ravens at The Greenhouse.

Seward (6-3, 1-2 KJCCC) travels to Hutchinson on Saturday for a 6 p.m. tip. Brock Kappelmann will have the call on 1270 AM and 92.3 FM.

The Saints lost the program's sixth straight game to the Red Ravens (7-1, 2-1). Seward shot just 38.6% from the field compared to Coffeyville's 53.2%. Coffeyville knocked in 11-19 from distance while Seward was 4-21 from deep. The Saints shot 51.9% from the free throw line (14-27), Coffeyville shot 77.3% (17-22). Seward forced 20 turnovers compared to just seven of their own.

Lyna Brooks Jr. and Lucas N'Gombo each scored 14 to pace the Saints. JJ Chapman had eight points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench. RJ McKinnie had nine points and Awit Mamer finished with an eye-catching eight steals.

Konstantin Popovic had a game-high 19 points for CCC. Ulysses Webb had 17 points off the bench while Jack Sorrell had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wamba Ngouateu had six assists.

The teams traded leads early but a dunk from Rashid Kuta at the 17:12 mark gave Coffeyville a 6-5 lead and they did not trail again in the game. A Brooks Jr. free throw cut the CCC lead to three, 17-14, a little more than midway through the half, but a few minutes later Coffeyville used two threes from Popovic and a layup from Sorrell to go on an 8-0 run and take a 27-16 lead with five minutes in the half. CCC led 42-25 at the break. Popovic and Webb combined for 26 first half points.

Seward did not cut the lead to single digits in the second half. They trimmed it to 11 multiple times, but Coffeyville had an answer each time. The Red Ravens led by as much as 24, 69-45, at the 6:20 mark.

The Saints outscored Coffeyville 36-24 in the paint. Seward outscored Coffeyville 37-36 in the second half.
