Bio

The 2025-26 season marks Marquis McCray’s first as an assistant coach at Seward County Community College.

McCray spent one season as a graduate assistant and two seasons as an assistant coach at Emporia State after spending four years as a student-athlete with the Hornets.

McCray’s first season as an assistant coach saw ESU finish 19-12 overall and 12-10 in MIAA play. ESU finished 11-18 during the 2024-25 season.

McCray was a member of Craig Doty’s first recruiting class at Emporia State. He went from walk-on student-athlete to earning a scholarship in his final season of eligibility.

Other coaching experience includes time as a camp clinician at Midwest Elite Basketball and as a camp director at Mr. Handles Youth Basketball Camp in Wichita.

McCray, a native of Wichita, Kan., played two seasons at Dodge City Community College (2016-18) prior to his time at Emporia State. He was a team captain as a sophomore, averaging 6.2 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Human Performance from Emporia State in 2021 and earned a Master’s of Science in Health, Physical Education and Coaching from ESU in 2023.
