LIBERAL, Kan. – The No. 25-ranked Seward County men used 44 bench points to earn a commanding 73-57 win over Hutchinson on Saturday afternoon at The Greenhouse.
Seward (15-7, 10-6 KJCCC) earned the season sweep over Hutchinson (10-12, 5-10) for the first time since the 2018-19 season with the win. It snapped a two-game losing streak for Seward, who return to The Greenhouse on Wednesday evening hosting the Pratt Beavers at 8 p.m. Admission is free.
The Saints used 44 bench points (compared to just five from Hutchinson) as well as knocking down 12-29 from downtown to guide them to the win. They outrebounded Hutch 31-24 and forced 14 turnovers, coughing it up only nine times themselves.
Antonio Williams Jr. led all scorers with 22 points (8-10 FT's) and five rebounds. Korbin Dowdell added 17 points (5-7 from three) and five assists and Lucas N'Gombo finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Hutchinson was led by Anthony Alston's 17 points and six assists. Bobby Cannon added 14 points and Daleron Thomas had 13 points.
Seward led by as much as 20 in the game. A Lucas N'Gombo layup gave the Saints a 9-7 lead at the 16:26 mark of the first half and they did not trail again. The Saints led 30-23 at halftime.
The Saints outscored Hutchinson 43-34 in the second half as Williams Jr poured in 16 of his 22 in the half shooting 4-6 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line.
A 14-0 run midway through the second half that was fueled by four threes, one from Awit Mamer, two from Dowdell, and one from Williams Jr., ignited the home crowd and gave the Saints a comfortable 49-29 lead with 11:09 to play. The Blue Dragons got as close as 10 but the Saints fended them off to secure the win and move to 8-1 at home this season.
Seward made 12-29 (41.4%) from deep compared to Hutchinson's 7-21 (33.3%). Seward was 15-22 (68.2%) from the free throw line, Hutchinson was 8-9 (88.9%). Both teams shot similarly from the field with Hutchinson 21-46 (45.7%) and Seward 23-51 (45.1%).
