Seward Drops 2 to Kirkwood to Close Out Series

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward baseball team closed out its home opening series on Sunday afternoon, falling 16-5 and 14-9 to the Kirkwood CC Eagles at Brent Gould Field.

Seward (2-4) dropped both ends of the doubleheader to Kirkwood (3-1), losing the final three games of the series after winning the opener 14-4 in a run rule.

The Saints now hit the road traveling to Odessa College for two games on Friday and then to Midland College on Saturday for two more.

Game 1: Kirkwood 16, Seward 5 (5 inn.)

A nine-run third inning from Kirkwood was the deciding factor in Seward's run-rule loss.

Kirkwood brought home four runs in the first inning but Seward tied it up after Isai Santaella hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first and then the Saints scored three more in the bottom of the second.

The Eagles plated nine runs in the third, sending 13 batters to the plate. They added three more in the fourth inning.

Seward used three pitchers in the game with Braden Whipple (L, 0-1) suffering the loss in relief.

Santaella finished 2-3 with two RBI. Garrett Fuentes and Diego Valero-Munoz each drove in runs. The Seward bats struck out eight times compared to two walks.

Game 1: Kirkwood 14, Seward 9 (7 inn.)

Relief pitcher Nick Moe-Oaks shone in his collegiate debut for Seward. The Saints trailed 14-0 in the top of the third with the bases loaded when Moe-Oaks entered the game. He got a strikeout to close the half inning, proceeding to toss 4.1 scoreless innings striking out eight, walking three and allowing a lone hit.

With Moe-Oaks throwing well the Saints scored nine unanswered runs to avoid the run rule. Juan Alvarez and Ryan Todd each finished with multi-hit games. Alvarez drove in four runs, adding a bases-clearing triple. Santaella drove in a pair of runs as well.

Stephen Lang was saddled with the loss as he started and threw 2.0 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits.

The Saints outhit Kirkwood 10-8, but 10 walks from the Saints' pitching staff were too much to overcome.
