Saints Swept by Vernon

LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward baseball was swept in a doubleheader by Vernon College on Sunday afternoon at Brent Gould Field.

The Saints (3-11) fell 7-3 in game one and 14-4 in game two as Vernon moved to 10-4 on the year.

Seward hosts Otero on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., kicking off a four-game home series.

Game 1: Vernon 7 Seward 3 (7 inn.)

Game one saw both teams held scoreless over the first three innings before Vernon struck with four runs in the top of the fourth.

Saint starter Cosme Vera Jr. (L, 1-1) took the loss throwing 4.0 innings allowing the four runs on four hits. He struck out and walked two.

Jhett Huffman got Seward on the board with a solo home run in the fifth, his first career long ball that made it 4-1. Vernon used three more runs in the sixth to lead 7-1. The Saints plated two in the seventh as a Gus Eylar two-run double scored Mason Gilbert and Jacob Urias.

Vernon's Jackson Wilkerson threw a complete game striking out four and walking three, allowing three earned runs.

Game 2: Vernon 14, Seward 4 (7 inn.)

Seward put up nine hits to Vernon's 11 in game two but the Saints fell 14-4 as the Chaparrals used two big innings to push ahead for the run rule win.

Seward took an early 3-1 lead in the first as Isai Santaella scored on a wild pitch and Cooper Turner doubled to right field scoring David Brabb and Juan Alvarez.

Vernon scored six in the second taking a 7-3 lead. They did not trail again.

Alvarez finished 3-4 with two runs scored for Seward.

Brandon Paez and Evan Dugdale each drove in three runs for Vernon.

The Saints used four pitchers with starter Cross Durham (L, 0-2) being hit with the loss allowing six earned runs on five hits. Caydon Holly threw a scoreless seventh for Seward.
