LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward baseball hosted Butler at Brent Gould Field on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader to close out the series.
The Saints (23-31, 15-13) won game one 8-3 and fell 8-4 in game two. Butler (26-23, 15-13) won the series 3-1 after winning both games in El Dorado on Thursday.
Seward will honor its sophomores on Wednesday when they host Cloud County at Brent Gould Field. First pitch is at 1 p.m. and the sophomores will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
Game 1: Seward 8, Butler 3 (7 Inn.)
Seward got a strong outing from Beau Lang (W, 4-3) and Braden Whipple (Save, 4) closed things out as the Saints won 8-3.
Lang allowed three runs in 4.2 innings while Whipple allowed a lone hit in the final 2.1 innings to close things out. Butler's three runs came off one swing of the bat, a three-run home run in the top of the fifth by Yusei Uzawa.
The Saints got out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The first inning saw Grant Cox single in Isai Santaella and later Juan Alvarez scored on a balk. The second saw Mason Gilbert score Jacob Urias on an infield single and Gilbert later scored on an error.
Butler got within one on the home run but Blaine Chancy helped seal the deal for the Saints.
Chancy hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth and hit a two-run double in the sixth to push the Saints to the win.
Grant Cox finished 3-4 while Chancy, Diego Valero-Munoz, Urias and Gilbert all had two base knocks as the Saints outhit Butler 13-6.
Game 2: Butler 8, Seward 4 (9 Inn.)
Seward did not score a run until the fifth inning as Butler raced out to a 5-0 lead in the game two loss.
Cooper Turner (L, 2-2) allowed four runs across 3.0 innings in his first start of the year. Ashton Creighton threw a strong 5.0 innings in relief, allowing just two runs, with six strikeouts.
The Saints were outhit 11-8 and struggled against Butler starter Andrew Dechaine who threw four scoreless.
Juan Alvarez was 2-3 with a run scored while Diego Valero-Munoz also had two hits and an RBI.
