Softball Goes 1-1 on Opening Day of Region 6 Tournament

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The seven-seed Seward softball team opened the Region 6 Tournament with a 1-1 record on Friday, falling 11-5 to two-seed Butler in the opener and rallying for a 20-10 win in the elimination game nightcap over six-seed Garden City.
Seward (20-32) picked up its 20th win of the season in the evening game.
The Saints will take on four-seed Colby on Saturday at 2 p.m. in another elimination contest.
Game 1: Butler 11, Seward 5
The Saints battled in the opener but ultimately fell 11-5. Each team made two errors with Butler outhitting Seward 9-6.
Butler struck first in the first with two runs but the Saints responded in the second as Mya Van Der Mey laced a two-RBI single to left center. Taryn Golden hit a two-run double in the third to give Seward a 4-2 lead, their only lead of the game. Butler scored eight unanswered runs over the next three innings, pulling ahead 10-4. Van Der Mey hit an RBI single I the sixth to make it 10-5 but Butler ultimately won 11-5.
Van Der Mey was 3-3 with three RBIs, Golden was 2-2. Grace Horne (L, 8-13) took the loss in the circle, allowing nine runs on six hits, walking seven, and striking out two.
Game 2: Seward 20, Garden City 10
The Saint bats came to play in the nightcap as Seward belted 16 hits to win 20-10 in an elimination game. Garden City helped the Saints with four errors.
Amithys Perez was 3-5 with four RBIs, Taryn Golden was 2-4 with three RBIs and Ella Doxey smashed a grand slam in the fourth as the Saints cruised to the victory.
Seward opened the game with four runs in the first off three hits and two errors. Garden City made it 4-2 in the bottom half, but again the Saints batted around their order in the second, plating four more. Seward led 13-4 in the fourth off ther Doxey grand slam, her first collegiate home run.
The Saints iced the game with five runs in the seventh.
Aaliyah Arredondo (W, 6-9) picked up the win in the circle throwing all seven innings on 150 pitches.
