LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Lady Saints fell 55-45 to the 25th ranked Coffeyville Red Ravens on Tuesday evening at The Greenhouse.
Seward (7-2, 2-1 KJCCC) dropped its first conference game of the season and its fourth straight game to Coffeyville (8-1, 2-1).
The Lady Saints shot just 37.3% from the field including 27% in the second half. Seward was outscored 28-19 in the second half and Coffeyville shot a game-high 58.3% in the fourth quarter.
There were five ties and six lead changes in the game but the Lady Saints led for just 2:09 of regulation compared to Coffeyville having the lead for 32:28.
The Red Ravens got out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter making it 14-4 on a Karliey Parker three at the 3:16 mark. They led 17-8 after the first quarter. Coffeyville's biggest lead of the game was 12 when they led 20-8 early in the second quarter. Seward outscored the Red Ravens 18-10 in the second quarter though, using an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 20-19 at the 3:42 mark off a RaMya Kennedy layup. An Avery Marchino jumper with five seconds remaining sent the Lady Saints to halftime trailing 27-26.
Seward again outscored Coffeyville in the third quarter, this time 12-11. Marchino scored the first points of the second half hitting a three to put Seward ahead 29-27. Their biggest lead of the game was three when Destiny Alexander made a layup to make it 33-30 with 6:28 in the third. A Tyniah Smith layup in the final 30 seconds of the quarter sent the game to the fourth knotted up 38-38.
Seward was just 3-11 shooting in the fourth quarter while Coffeyville shot 7-12 outscoring the Lady Saints 17-7 to snag the win. The Red Ravens scored the first eight points of the quarter before Seward used a Marchino three to cut the lead to 46-41 with 5:37 to play. A Marchino layup at the 3:26 mark cut the lead to three at 48-45 but Seward did not score again and Coffeyville used a 7-0 run to close out the game.
Marchino had a game-high 18 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Fagan had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Alexander finished with eight points, six rebounds. Smith had four points and five rebounds off the bench.
Esme Smith led the Ravens with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Parker and Aubrey Hishaw finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Both teams had 20+ turnovers, Seward with 21 and Coffeyville with 20. Seward was 2-2 from the free throw line and Coffeyville was 8-11. Both teams finished with 32 rebounds while Coffeyville outscored Seward 30-24 in the paint.
