LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College women's basketball fell behind early and could not recover in a 77-51 loss to No. 14 Butler Community College Saturday at the Greenhouse.
The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lady Saints, who closed the first part of their season at 5-3 in the Jayhawk Conference and 10-4 overall. Seward resumes its season on Saturday, January 3 at Independence.
Seward was led by Grace Posch and Kimora Fagan, who scored 11 points apiece. Destiny Alexander added 10 points and RaMya Kennedy finished with nine off the bench for the Lady Saints.
Seward played close early and trailed 21-15 after one quarter. The Lady Saints continued to hang tough and the cut to the lead to three at 24-21 with 8:21 left in the second quarter, but the Grizzlies answered with a pair of 10-0 runs, opening a 44–27 advantage at halftime.
Despite making stops on defense in the third quarter, Seward could muster only nine points in the period and trailed 56-36 heading into the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies pulled away in the final stanza and finished with the 77-51 win.
Destiny Smith had 22 points, Keegan Yarick added 16 points and Mya Mayberry scored 14 points to power Butler, which improved to 6-1 in conference play and 12-1 overall.
