Seward Women Rout Cowley on Sophomore Day
LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Lady Saints led wire-to-wire in a commanding 104-55 victory over the Cowley Tigers on Saturday afternoon at The Greenhouse.
With the win, Seward (19-10, 14-9 KJCCC) secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming KJCCC/Region 6 Division 1 Basketball Tournament, regardless of the outcome in Wednesday's regular-season finale with the Dodge City Conquistadors. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Greenhouse. Admission is free, and La Mexicana will serve as the game sponsor.
Seward will host a first-round matchup on Saturday against the No. 12 seed. Game time and opponent will be announced later this week.
Following the game, the Lady Saints honored sophomores Avery Marchino, Trinitee Holmes, RaMya Kennedy and Destiny Alexander in a postgame ceremony. Each was joined on the court by family, friends and coaches.
Seward seized control early, closing the first quarter on a 14-0 run over the final 4:38 to build a 21-6 advantage. The Lady Saints limited Cowley to 2-of-11 shooting in the opening period and forced seven turnovers.
The margin continued to swell, with Seward leading by as many as 49 points. The Lady Saints dominated the glass with a 51-29 rebounding edge, dished out 25 assists compared to Cowley's four and controlled the paint with a 52-22 scoring advantage.
Marchino narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 30 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists — her fourth 30-point performance of the season. Kimora Fagan added 16 points and six rebounds. Alexander contributed 14 points and six boards, while Holmes finished with 13 points and five rebounds.
Cowley was paced by Aniyah Burney, who scored 18 points.
The win pushed head coach Will Marchino into third all-time in the Seward record book passing Austin Mefford with a career record of 56-37.
