Lady Saints knock off Garden City for a 62-59 come-from-behind win

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Seward County Community College women's basketball team battled back in the fourth quarter and knocked off Garden City Community College, 62-59, to earn a road win on Wednesday.

The Lady Saints extended their winning streak to three games, improving to 5-2 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and 10-3 overall. Seward hosts Butler at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Greenhouse to close out the first part of its season.

It was nip and tuck throughout the first three quarters with the teams tied 9-9 after one and Garden City up by four points at the half, 38-34. Seward took the third quarter and the teams were deadlocked again after three periods at 49 each.

To start the fourth quarter, the Broncbusters jumped out to a five-point lead, 55-50, with 5:23 left, but Seward came back with an Avery Marchino layup and a Trinitee Holmes three-pointer to knot the game at 55. After trading baskets, the Lady Saints took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Holmes at 59-57 with just three minutes to go.

Destiny Alexander notched a bucket in traffic and Seward led 61-57 with 42 seconds left. Garden City scored one more time, but it was too little late as Avery Marchino netted one of two free throws to cap the final scoring at 62-59.

Marchino led all scorers with 22 points and Holmes and Alexander each netted 12 points for Seward, which was efficient in its shooting – (22-of-44 from the field, including 6-of-10 from the three-point line and 12-of-16 from the charity stripe.)

Luana Luz had 13 points to pace Garden City, which fell to 4-2 in conference play and 9-2 overall.
