Martins’ Goal Sends Saints to 1st Ever Win Over Grizzlies

EL DORADO, Kan. – For the second time this season, Seward women's soccer has knocked off a conference rival for the first time in program history.

The Saints (4-3-0, 3-3-0 KJCCC) defeated the Butler Grizzlies (3-6-3,2-3-1) 1-0 at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex on Saturday evening, the first win for the Saints over the Grizzlies in the three-year history of the program. Earlier this season the Saints also defeated the Barton Cougars for the first time.

Sophomore Eduarda Martins netted the Saints lone goal just three minutes into the first half as her free kick sailed high and the Grizzly goalkeeper was unable to make a play on the ball as it went over her head.

The Saints defense then played tough enough for the early goal lead to hold. Butler finished with 14 shots to Seward's three.

Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Benck finished with two saves while Martins had two of Seward's shots, Julia Astrath had the other.

In conference play, Seward now sits at 3-3-0 and is tied with Barton for third place.

The Saints host Garden City on Wednesday at 6 p.m. from Redskin Field.
