Late Penalty Shot Sinks Saints

LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward County women's soccer put together a strong second-half, but a late Garden City penalty shot was the deciding factor in a 2-1 loss to the Broncbusters on Wednesday evening at Redskin Field.

With five and a half minutes to play and the game tied 1-1, a foul called in the box on the Saints (4-4-0, 3-4-0) saw Garden City's (9-2-2, 4-2-1) Alessandra Tovar get rewarded with a one-on-one penalty shot which she sunk to give the Busters a 2-1 lead.

Seward had two shots on goal in the final two minutes but were unable to convert and lost 2-1.

The Broncbusters struck first in the 38th minute when Maddison Foster converted off an assist from Cecilia Garcia, giving them a 1-0 lead which they eventually took to halftime.

Seward responded early in the second half. In the 59th minute, Julia Astrath set up Giuliana Granada, who slotted home the equalizer from 30 yards out for her first goal of the season. The Saints controlled much of the second period, outshooting Garden City 7-2 and creating five corner kick opportunities. For the game, Seward outshot Garden 9-5 and had seven corner kicks to Garden City's one.

Caroline Benck recorded two saves in net for the Saints. Granada's goal highlighted a balanced attack that saw six shots on target from the Saints.

The Saints will look to bounce back when they travel to Dodge City on Sunday for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Barton Cougars. The game is being played in Dodge City due to ongoing renovations to the Cougars field in Great Bend.
