COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — A late goal from freshman Julia Astrath helped the Seward County women's soccer team salvage a 1-1 draw on the road against the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
After falling behind early, the Saints (4-6-1, 3-6-1 KJCCC) controlled much of the match but struggled to break through until Astrath found the equalizer in the 87th minute. The goal was her team-leading fifth of the season.
Coffeyville (2-11-2, 1-8-1) struck first when Peniel Iwuchukwu scored off a feed from Celeste Lira in the opening minutes of the match, giving the Red Ravens a 1-0 lead they carried into halftime.
Seward outshot Coffeyville 24-4, including an 18-2 edge in shots on goal, but were denied multiple times by Red Ravens goalkeeper Macy Lemke, who finished with nine saves.
Saints goalkeeper Caroline Benck made two saves in the draw.
The match marked the first draw of the season for either team.
The Saints now shift their sights to Redskin Field as they host Hutchinson on Wednesday at 7 p.m., the first night match of the season for Seward.
