Silva Powers Saints to Sweep of Cloud County

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Greenhouse has been favorable to the Lady Saints volleyball squad this season.

After 17 days between matches at home, the Lady Saints (5-10, 2-2 KJCCC) returned to The Greenhouse and swept (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) the Cloud County Thunderbirds (5-13, 0-4) in straight sets to snap a six-match losing streak. The Saints are 2-0 at home this season with the win over Cloud County and a win over Butler, with the Butler win on Sept. 3rd being their last victory before Saturday. Those matches also are the Saints best hitting percentage matches of the season, (.240 vs. Butler and .221 vs Cloud).

Seward trailed 14-10 in set one before kicking into gear, outscoring the T-Birds 15-2 to claim a 25-16 set one win. Set two saw Seward and Cloud get out to a 13-13 tie before the Saints went on a 12-4 run to close the set out and go ahead 2-0. The third set was tight throughout, with Cloud pulling within one at 21-20 and forcing a Seward timeout. Nicolly Chaves landed a kill out of the timeout and Mariana Silva landed two of her own combined with a few T-Bird errors and the Saints snagged the 3-0 win.

Silva powered the Saints to the win with a season-high tying 25 kills on .347 hitting. Ana Nikolic had a team-high 10 digs, Maja Kobielska totaled a team-high 17 assists and Mina Milivojevic and Mireya Kawaguchi each had three service aces.

The win marked the first 3-0 sweep win of the season for the Saints.

Seward now sets its sights on the Hutchinson Blue Dragons, traveling to the Sports Arena for a match on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
